Hi Coast to Coast friends!

Well, I’m finally sending you fabrics for my quilt blocks! So sorry it’s late and please know that I DO NOT expect you to get these to me in December. Oh my goodness, no. If you can get them to me by the end of January that would just be wonderful!

What I’d love:

1 or 2 -- 15 ½ inch block(s) -- I will add sashing later probably

Block style: log cabin (regular or slightly wonky) – in the style shown in the inspiration photos below (click on photo to go to original) or go to my post on our blog: www.coast2coastbee.blogspot.com/2010/11/december-is-my-month.html

I’d like a little white (I’ve enclosed a little Kona “snow”) in each block, but please not on the outside (I’ll probably be using white for the sashing)

If you’d like to add any of your own fabrics, please feel free to, but it’s not necessary.

Final Note: I think you have enough fabric to do 2 blocks, if you wish to. That would be awesome! If you don’t want to do 2 blocks or don’t have enough fabric, would you mind sending bigger scraps back with your completed block? I bought this fabric about a year ago and am afraid I won’t be able to find everything to finish out the 24 blocks I need.

Hello Block Party members! December is my month...I thought it would never get here and, well, now it just about is and I'm not quite ready.

My husband and I are taking a trip out of the country for a week, so I'm gonna be a little late getting the fabric and instructions to you. I really meant to try and send it during November (where did this month go???!!!) but that didn't happen.

So...I will return on December 7 and it will take me a couple of days to get everything cut and planned. I will tell you that this is my inspiration:

Oh, and...especially since you won't be getting the fabric until the 2nd week of December hopefully, I don't expect you to return them in December. Anytime in December or January will be great!

Hey everyone...

After all this year and its problems and how far I (seriously) got behind, I decided it would be unfair to send out block material for me.

I focused all my attention in making sure blocks went out. I realize some of you may be done already, but I thought you might like the blocks to make a pillowcase or something.

Thank you all for your patience. I did enjoy these blocks. It is always fun to learn something new and to see other's choice in fabrics.

I finished up Bibi's block a couple days ago. Sunday morning, coffee with cream, and quilting - what could be better?

Bibi, I didn't square it up for you for a couple reasons: I didn't have a 9.5" ruler and after the week I had last week, I wasn't sure if I should try to square it up. I was worried I'd take too much off one side. Sorry!

September Houses

Hello Coast to Coast Quilters!

September is my month and I'd like to make a neighborhood quilt with a house block from you. I'm inspired by a house quilt made by my guild. I love how a request for houses turned up mansions, cabins, beach houses and light houses. I can't wait to see what you create!

This is my inspiration quilt.

I'd like the houses to be 10.5" high and any width you care to make it. I've included background fabric and an "inspiration" fabric. This is a fabric I like that you may include in your house in any way you wish. A window, a door, a roof, whatever. Either straight or wonky houses are gratefully accepted. Please use fabric from your stash for the rest of the house. If this is too vague or you need more fabric, just let me know. No need to send any scraps back to me. There are lots of house blocks out there, but here is one and another that only need slight modification to make them 10.5" high. Here is a great collection of wonky houses.

These are some house blocks I've made or already been given for the start of my neighborhood. If you're inspired to make a tree block (also 10.5" tall) or add a tree next to your house for the neighborhood, that would be terrific. However, just a house is terrific as well.

One day late! I finished one block last night and the other tonight. The color in the blue/green one is off because I photographed it at night, sans flash.

The story on the tilted book (which I wish wasn't floating so much): this is the last bit of fabric left from my niece Alex's quilt - which was the very first quilt I ever made. I used the other leftovers of this fabric in the doll quilt I made her last spring for her 4th birthday, which happened to be about 2 weeks after her sister was born so I wanted her to have something special.

And a bonus shot from my husband of both with my "assistant" napping on the job. He's taken up photography as his hobby and is learning how to use a camera we bought from my brother (a photojounalist by trade).

Even though it feels like I have been. It's been an insane couple of months. We moved; my grandmother and a close friend passed away, and I had surgery...so yeah..like I said...it's been insane. I'm here, though, and am FINALLY caught up. YAY!! So here's a pic of all the blocks that have now gone postal. So sorry for the delay guys. Please forgive me. :(

Hi Ladies,

I have July and since it's my son's birth month I let him choose which block we'll be doing. He picked Pinwheels, more specifically Block 2 from ps i quilts quilt a long. Please follow Rachel's instructions, since this is the size block I'm going to go with. I'll be sending 3 different fabrics...2 with a quitar theme and a white Kona. There's will be enough fabric to make 2 blocks and I would love it you would, if you can't do but one that's okay, too. I'll be sending out the envelopes by next wednesday. Tracy's April Blocks

Hi girls, it's been quiet on the CtoC Block party. How are you doing with those crazy April blocks? If anyone is having serious "quilters block" regarding these Story People characters, please don't feel bad about it. You can make me a block of postage stamps, or wonky star or anything your little heart desires. Any shape or size is just fine. I have several blocks that are exactly what I was hoping for and I think that improv blocks using the solids would be a perfect compliment the blocks that I have received.

Hi ladies! Anita and I have switched months! So I'll be doing June and she will be doing November. I just posted my inspiration mosaic to our flickr pool. Carissa, over at the Common Threads Bee, had a great idea for her month this spring, and I was so green with envy, I'm pulling a page from her book--literally! I'm a librarian, and a bookshelf quilt is a natural choice.

So, here's what we'll do.

I'm going to send everyone a FQ or so of the same background fabric, an ivory solid. What I'm asking you to do is make 12.5" (unfinished) tall bookshelves full of books made with your scraps for the books! Tall, short, fat, thin--use the mosaic for some inspiration. Look at your bookshelves at home, go to the library and the bookstore--all great places to get inspired for this one. You can make several narrow blocks, one big long block--go nuts. These should come together fairly quickly.

If you have no scraps, shame on you! Kidding! Seriously, if you're feeling that your scrap bin is too skimpy for this project, let me know and I will send along some of my own. My hope for this is to wind up with an array of books from all different fabrics, which I will then sash and border in dark brown "shelves".

Packages will be going out in the next day or so, so everyone should have their fabric by the beginning of next week.

Quilting to find a cure for cancer

Hi ladies! This isn't really related to the bee but I thought you might be interested in this...

I am raffling off two quilts as part of my efforts to raise $3500 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I am trying to help find a cure for blood cancers, and hopefully all cancers. We are *this close* to finding a cure for lymphoma and that cure could lead to a cure for all cancers.

Both are lap quilt-sized, with the Land & Sea (blue & green) measuring approx 46" x 52" and the Raspberry Limeade (pink & green) measuring approx 42" x 60". Hello All (am I doing this right?)
I just wanted to let you know that I am still waiting for some more of my fabric to come in the mail- Chez Moi Boutique by Moda. I had a little and panicked in the middle of the night while I was up with my teething toddler and had to order more! I went with layer cakes and charm packs for ease. April and May are my crazy months with tons of family birthdays and graduations plus gearing up for Farmers Market.
Hope you are all enjoying better weather than us in VT the last couple days. Yesterday we had 6" of snow and there is still some left on the ground now. Yuck!

March blocks?

Hey Ladies,

I know I haven't received a couple people's blocks yet. And I haven't made my own either!

I was hoping to get the quilt put together over the next month or so. It would be great if I could have all the March blocks back by the end of April. If you can't make it by the end of April, let me know.

Story People Block Tutorial for April

I have an image in my head of a strangely out of proportion soul with either a
funky sun in the sky or balloons or something.
I started randomly with the yellow and blue and sewed them together
thinking this would be part of the body somehow.

Then I added white. I know I want a lot of white space
around the colors.

Next, orange and purple.
Legs, perhaps?

But they need to be curvy, so I placed a larger white piece on top and made sure it extended past the orange by several inches so it would give me the "white space" that I was after.
Then I just cut a curve with my rotary cutter.
I discarded the small piece and took the large curved piece, put the right sides together.
Notice I folded and marked the centers first so the the curve would line up nicely.

Next, pinned the heck out of it, stitched and pressed the seam away from center.

Repeated for the other side and here we have a leg.
(Ignore the red block. I was going somewhere with it, and decided not to.)

Pink and celery.
Repeat for the second leg.

I attached the legs and the "belt" type mid-section

Decided on a turquoise body again, attaching the white.
I will square this all up later.

This is staring to look like what I had in my head.

The red block is back!

And becomes a hat - a triangle hat!
I used the half-square-triangle method here.
Next, added more white and attached it to his body/head.

This bottom could use a little attention.

I cut it, added more white and squared it up.

Next time I have a few minutes I am going to be primarily using my machine to stitch
some wavy arms, a face, and applique a sun or something.
Maybe add a bead or something to the tip of his hat.

I'll post more pics as I get them.

If you are completely not enjoying this and way out of your comfort zone, let me know.
I have some other ideas for the colors that will incorporate nicely with this idea.
This is supposed to be fun so if it is not, make sure you let me know!!!

This is what I came up with. I was going off the boat picture I saw.

I wanted so much to be crazy creative like the photos...but I think I missed the mark.

March Blocks for Jennifer

Hi Guys,

I've finished blocks for Jennifer and gotten them in the mail. I hope that they work well in the finished quilt. They were a lot of fun and gave me the opportunity to try a new technique. I wanted to make sure that they came out to the proper size, so I used freezer paper to make the templates and sew them together with the correct seam allowances. Here they are:

April Challenge

Ok ladies.
Who's up for a challenge?

Do you think you can create a block that captures the essence of this artwork? Spend some time on the website. There are certain menu options that have pictures and others that just have the sayings so you'll have to surf around a bit. The best place to go is to "prints" and just keep hitting the orange "next" at the top of the page.

I love this art and have several pieces of it. I want to create a quilt top with this same feel and redo the room where this art is over the summer.

Now, if you are intimidated by this, please let me know and I can choose another block and fabric to send. I'll go with majority rule here.

I will only be asking for one block anywhere from 10" to 15". I will send out lots of colorful Kona solids to everyone. I'm think anything goes here; applique, machine stitching, straight lines, curves, embroidery even embellishments.

My plan was to have a sample and a few tutorial pics to post, however a nice weekend and life in general got in the way.

Can't wait to hear what you think about this.

I intentionally overbought fabric because I planned to use it for a baby quilt or something later so I still have more than enough.

Hello...

At long last I'm coming aboard and catching up.

My name is Anita Maher-Lewis. I live in Ames, IA. Some of you know that as you've mailed me blocks and are patiently waiting for me to send them back! I'm working on them, I promise. :)

I apologize for being absent for so long. I could tell you that I've been buried under 3 feet of snow that is just now starting to melt...which would be the truth. However it just has been a hard three months. My father died suddenly late last year and then my mom got really sick. Probably as a result of being so sick, she had a couple of small strokes (TIAs). She is doing better now. But unfortunately they both live(d) in Phoenix (with separate partners) so dealing with all of this has been very strenuous and stressful as you can imagine. I'm coming up for air now and so grateful that spring is around the corner.

What a fantastic idea! I couldn't wait to get started on Jennifer's blocks with the photos. Unlike me, once I saw the photos and the fabrics I knew exactly where I wanted to go. Two blocks done. Just like that.

As I started to pack up the scraps to send back, the butterflies on one of the fabrics caught my eye. What do you think? Butterfly or no?

I am sending back Jennifer's blocks. I loved working with this soft, light fabric. It made me think of spring as the snow melts outside my window. (We still have piles as much as 5 feet tall from where they cleared the parking lot.)

I hit the post office at lunch time today (and apparently so did everyone else, without their packages ready to go - ugh!) and mailed off the packages with the fabric for March.

In the packets, I promised to post links to a couple different tutorials for inspiration and I might add a few more. Whew, I'm kind of tired just thinking about it! I am annoyed though, my machine decided to take a break from working last night and is headed to the doctor today for repairs. I was working on my Quilts for Kids quilt and all the sudden the feed dogs just stopped working. But I have my stats final tonight and then do not start my next class for a week and a half so I was going to work on some UFO's, two quilts for the Quilts for Kids project and P.S. I Quilt's Pinwheel Sampler. *sigh)

I've pieced Ebony blocks for February at the buzzer so to speak. Maybe I should be easier on myself as I technically finished them 36 hours before the end of the month. Of course, these blocks won't hit the post until Monday which means they are 1 day late from that perspective. Like most things---it's all in your perspective.

Here's the wonky log cabin blocks for Ebony. I enjoyed pulling a few fabrics from my stash to add to hers.

Hi Ladies! The Olympics got the best of me this week so the farbic for March will be mailed either Saturday or Monday. I am now addicted to curling and sleep deprived because I found I like the events they have on late night better than the prime time events!
The envelopes are addressed, the fabric is washed and pressed but not all is cut... I am close to having it all ready. My cat was trying to "help" my last night by darting in and out of the fabric hanging over the ironing board to the ground and attacking the loose threads. She's lucky she's so cute!
Also, I made a quick edit to this blogger page. The bee logo on the right side of the page now links to the Flickr pool. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to add the Flickr badge like I have on my own blog. *sigh

More blocks for Ebony!

I finally finished my blocks for Ebony this morning. I added a couple fabrics from my stash. I wanted to add more green but all my greens were more lime-y :-(

I am working on cutting fabric and getting the March packets ready to mail this week. My goal is Friday but we'll see. School may intervene with my plans so it may be more like next weekend.

I just wanted to thank everyone for all the fabulous blocks that are arriving! They're all great and have a little something different from your stashes. I think it's going to be a wonderful quilt.

I've been trying to comment on blogger, but something isn't working correctly so I chose a post instead. Once all the blocks have arrived I will post a picture of the top as quickly as possible.

I was so excited to get these blocks finished. They were lots of fun to work on and my first “wonky” log cabin blocks. I can hardly wait to see this quilt finished. I’m snowed in today but will hopefully get these mailed tomorrow.

I had some sewing time this weekend, (even though we did not get snow here in Connecticut), and I had fun making wonky log cabins for Ebony. The fabrics I received were great, I added more pinks and b/w to one log cabin with a more controlled placement, and made the other totally random. Great block choice, Ebony!

Katie's Finished Top

Okay Ladies... Today I worked on the sashing for the quilt and put it all together. Took me a while but I finally found a sorting that I like.

There were two blocks that were about 1.5 inches smaller then the others, so I saved them to put on the back with the tag which will have all of your first names and our group on it as well. I hope that is okay!

I just got home and found Ebony's fabric in the mail box. So, looks like I'll have something to do when the snow storm hits.....as long as it closes the stores and I get off. Either way I have saturday morning off, so I'll get to play then.

But right as the snow started to fall, my toddler fell asleep and the mail came, which made a perfect storm for...sewing! And since Ebony's fabric just arrived in the mail...I thought I would just do her blocks!

They were so fun! I love how they came out! I hope she will too!

You ladies are amazing. You all sent your blocks back in just enough time so that I have a wonderful project for this MAJOR snow storm that is coming. They are all so beautiful, so personal. I have loved getting the notes you sent with them.

I hit Joanns tonight (with all the other crazy crafting ladies--joanns and the grocery store!) to get some white for sashing. I think I am going to go with white because it will make the blocks pop! We will see...

Tomorrow (after a few other projects that are due first), I am going to lay them out on the floor and see what looks best! I will be sure to share.

I'm in the middle of a move, so things have been crazy and hectic. My sewing machine will be the LAST thing I pack though. :) Between Etsy orders, I was finally able to get some sewing time in and work on the blocks.

I've sent off Katie's blocks, and since we live so close to one another they should arrive tomorrow or Wednesday. I had a lot of fun with these. I'm pretty sure that I have some of the butterfly fabric in my stash. I used her blocks as the background and added a few fun prints to the selections to make my blocks. Here they are:

I started Katie's blocks nearly a month ago and then had not been able to work on them since. All this week, I wanted to work on them but had to spend the time doing homework for my online class and my stats homework :-( Last night I got caught up to where I need to be for my online class and then just started sewing my heart out. I tried a variation on the wonky star and tweaked the sawtooth star but just kept sewing. That's right Katie, I kept going and made 4 blocks instead of 2! It was fun to try some new blocks but not have to worry about making the rest of the quilt. Katie, I hope your daughter enjoys her quilt. These are going in today or Monday's mail!

Something old, something new....

No bride here just a quilter. I enjoyed Katie's request as it allowed me to sew something familiar but allowed me the chance to try something new. I was easily able to construct 4 blocks from the fabrics sent so I created a nine patch (old), wonky star (old), a friendship star (new) and a pale star (new). I adore the wonky star but found it more challenging in this size than in the 12.5 inch block size executed for Quilts of Valor block donation so I have to say my favorite was the pale star. I'm thinking I might use this pattern for another bee in which I'm participating where we're challenging ourselves to take traditional blocks modern.

The pink and purple make me smile. My son Erik, with a horrified look on his face asked, "You're not sewing that quilt for our house, are you?". Two boys at this house will most likely help me package these for the post so as to rid our house of the pink! You can safely bet that my month will mean no pink.

Can't wait to see these all together!

First Blocks Back

I have to tell you that sheer joy and excitement that shot through my veins as I retrieved my mail yesterday to find… an envelope from one of you ladies!!! It was from Ellen Crary!

I couldn’t open it right away… after arriving home to a barking dog, a hungry husband, and a crying two year old, other things drew my attention. But once the child was tucked in, the husband occupied with his late night tv show, the dog eating away at his bone… I opened it up!!

Not just two blocks, but three! Amazing! Wonderful job Ellen! Thank you!

I haven’t even started my blocks yet, but am very much looking forward to it. That is one of my goals as I finish Christmas presents this week!

Here's the buterfly fabric Katie has sent for here blocks. I actually own the pink one myself:) HMMM....now to decide which pattern to pick from. I'm kinda leaning towards the Pale Star, but will play with some of my scraps 1st to see how that one looks. Katie, Thanks so much for the Christmas ornament! I just love it and it'll definetly have a place on our Christmas tree[once we get around to setting it up this week]. Good luck to both you and your husband on your examinations.

Ladies- I am the one for January. When would you like your fabric? I would be happy to send them before Christmas so that those of you who have vacation time or time off might be able to get started.

But, if that is too crazy, I can wait till January first. I am going to make the packets early anyway because my life is CRAZY in Dec/January… But let me know the majority preference, and I will send them out whenever.
